WHAT'S YOUR RESPONSE?

I was talking to someone on msn today and they asked: is it ever right to lie......?

My answer was: well, I wouldn't say it's "right" to lie, but it can help us to avoid uncomforatble circumstances...I should say more to this, but I'm not exactly sure what to say right now.

I told her I'd post the question on my blog and see what comes up. So what's your response?

that is a difficult question for believers, as we read "thou shall not lie".... a seemingly no ifs ands or buts statement. but I wonder if there is a difference between lying and not telling the truth. i know for a fact i would lie if it came down to saving a life... maybe not my own, i'm not sure. even then, i would have to wait til this life is over to know if i was justified in doing so. God is about truth, and life... so our words should be of God and should speak life... i think that i have told many lies that have been closer to that truth than many of my truthful statements.

I remember learning that the text is more accurately translated "thou shall not deceive," in which case actions are held just as accountable.
Yes, it is a sin to lie. While such an absolute statement may make us uncomfortable, we have no real grounds for trying to weasel our way out of it. If we really believe God is all-powerful, then surely we must believe He can intervene in any situation. Surprises do happen.
Does this mean I would choose to tell the truth in a life-or-death situation? I cannot truly answer that... sadly I have doubts my faith is strong enough, and yet who knows?

okay so here i am finally commenting on your bloggy thingy.....I really dont know how to answer that question besides basically i do not think that it is a good idea to lie...EVER! i think that as Christians we need to be truthful because a none Christian may here that a christian has lied and then stereotype Christians and assume that all Christians are liers. thats my thought...but i dont know and wow i just said Christian a hole lot in that one sentence.....But Jesus never lied and I think that it is our responsibility to be truthful always....your sins will find you out and if you are to lie i think that you would just get yourself in more trouble than if you just told the truth in the first place. ...sorry if im rambling and not saying anything...i dont know what i am saying but that is just how my head is today....bad day to comment i guess.....
